News And Press Senior Companion volunteers are people age 55 and older who provide companionship for frail older adults in the home, at day centers, or other community sites. Companions assist with daily tasks, helping those served to remain living in the community for longer. Companions may provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping assistance, meal preparation, and advocacy. They also provide respite to caregivers of frail elders. By remaining active and contributing to their communities, Companions benefit from the program along with the clients they serve. Over the course of more than 45 years of service to Rhode Island’s seniors, volunteers have dedicated countless hours of friendship, compassion and a much-needed human interaction to those in need of a helping hand.
